Equity funds invest primarily in the shares of listed companies, spanning large-, mid- and small-cap segments and a range of investing styles. Because share prices move with company performance and overall market sentiment, these funds can swing sharply in the short term, and they are generally discussed in the context of long-term goals. SEBI classifies them into defined sub-categories — large-cap, flexi-cap, mid-cap, small-cap, ELSS, sectoral and thematic among them — each with its own mandate on where the money can go.

Investing horizon

Equity funds are generally associated with longer holding periods, since short-term price swings have historically evened out over multi-year market cycles.

Volatility & drawdowns

A fund's past ups and downs — including its worst peak-to-trough decline — indicate the scale of fluctuation an investor would have had to sit through.

Costs (expense ratio)

The annual expense ratio is deducted from the fund's returns every year, so a lower ongoing cost leaves more of the gross return with the investor.

Mandate & style

The scheme's category and investment style define where it can invest and how it tends to behave in different market conditions.
